When you can cut a hedge

Why hedge cutting has a season, the nesting bird law behind it, and how to trim without breaking it.

Hedges have a season, and it is not only about the plant. Between roughly March and August, hedges are where birds nest, and the law protects an active nest whatever the reason you are cutting.

The law

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to intentionally damage or destroy the nest of a wild bird while it is in use or being built. In practice that means the main hedge cutting window is late summer through to the end of winter, avoiding the nesting season, and checking a hedge for active nests before any trim in between.

Cutting without harming the hedge

Hedge trimming is listed under gardening on Halo Hive, and the seasonal timing is part of why booking ahead matters.
